Welche Vulkane brechen gerade aus?
Die Liste oben ist das, was Satelliten in den letzten vierundzwanzig Stunden gemessen haben. Sie ist nicht die Liste der ausbrechenden Vulkane: Ein Ausbruch unter Wolken oder ein zu kühler Ausbruch fehlt darin, und ein nach dem Ausbruch abkühlendes Lavafeld kann noch darin stehen.
Wie viele aktive Vulkane gibt es auf der Welt?
Die Smithsonian Institution katalogisiert rund 1300 Vulkane mit einem Ausbruch im Holozän, also etwa in den letzten 10.000 Jahren. Zu einem gegebenen Zeitpunkt brechen weit weniger aus — typischerweise einige Dutzend.
Woran erkennt ein Satellit, dass ein Vulkan aktiv ist?
Er misst Infrarotstrahlung. Lava, heiße Gase und frische Ablagerungen strahlen weit mehr ab als der Boden ringsum, deshalb erfasst ein Wärmesensor sie aus dem Orbit — bei Tag wie bei Nacht, aber nicht durch dichte Wolken.
Bedeutet ein fehlender Vulkan, dass er aufgehört hat?
Nein. Es heißt, dass dort im Zeitfenster kein Satellit Wärme gemessen hat. Wolken, der Zeitpunkt des Überflugs oder ein unter der Oberfläche eingeschlossener Ausbruch erzeugen dieselbe Stille.

Was diese Messung ist — und was nicht

  • Strahlungsleistung ist das Infrarot, das ein Sensor in dem Moment empfing, als er darüber hinwegzog. Sie misst weder Emissionen noch Verschmutzung noch irgendeinen Beitrag zum Klimawandel — ein Solarpark kann die Liste allein durch reflektiertes Sonnenlicht anführen.
  • Eine Quelle, die auf dieser Seite fehlt, ist keine ruhende Quelle: Ein Polarsatellit überfliegt sie zweimal am Tag, Wolken verdecken den Boden, und ein Standort, der zwischen zwei Überflügen heiß war, wurde nie gesehen.
  • Der Standortkatalog ist eine Momentaufnahme, von Hand neu erstellt. Ein Werk, das nach dem letzten Aufbau in Betrieb ging, fehlt darin, und ein stillgelegtes Werk steht noch darin.
