Land-based air tanker
It loads water or retardant on the ground and attacks from a runway base. It can knock down flames with water or lay a retardant line ahead of the fire to slow its spread and support crews on the ground.
What this type can do
Ontario’s DHC-6 Twin Otter is a short-takeoff utility aircraft that can be fitted with water tanks for wildland fire suppression. Its tundra tires and high-wing twin-turboprop layout also let it carry crews, fuel, or supplies into remote areas; unlike the CL-415, it refills on the ground.

The de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter is a Canadian STOL utility aircraft developed by de Havilland Canada in the mid-1960s and still in production. It was built by De Havilland Canada from 1965 to 1988. In 2006, Viking Air purchased the type certificate and restarted production in 2008, before re-adopting the name De Havilland Canada. In 2023, DHC started production of the 300-G, an upgraded version of the Series 400 with Garmin avionics.
