About the Ayres Thrush

Land-based air tanker

It loads water or retardant on the ground and attacks from a runway base. It can knock down flames with water or lay a retardant line ahead of the fire to slow its spread and support crews on the ground.

What this type can do

The S-2R-T660 is an agricultural-derived single-engine turboprop tanker. Its smaller load and agile handling favor precise initial-attack and flank drops close to a reload base, using water, foam, or retardant carried in its integral hopper.

This describes the type’s usual firefighting capability; it does not prove what this aircraft is carrying or doing now.

Ayres Thrush

The Ayres Thrush, formerly the Snow S-2, Aero Commander Ag Commander, and Rockwell Thrush Commander, is an American agricultural aircraft produced by Ayres Corporation and more recently by Thrush Aircraft. It is one of the most successful and long-lived agricultural application aircraft types in the world, with almost 2,000 sold since the first example flew 70 years ago. Typical of agricultural aircraft, it is a single-seat monoplane of conventional taildragger configuration. Originally powered by a radial piston engine, most examples produced since the 1980s have been turboprop-powered.
