About the Canadair CL-215

Amphibious water bomber

It refills while skimming a suitable lake, river, or sea surface, then makes short water-drop rotations when a safe water source is close to the fire. It attacks flames directly with water or foam rather than laying long retardant lines.

What this type can do

The piston-powered CL-215 was designed around water bombing. It scoops roughly 5,400 litres from a suitable water surface and returns for repeated direct drops; its advantage is sustained water delivery near a safe scoop site.

This describes the type’s usual firefighting capability; it does not prove what this aircraft is carrying or doing now.

The Canadair CL-215 Scooper is the first model in a series of amphibious flying boats designed and built by Canadian aircraft manufacturer Canadair, and later produced by Bombardier. It is one of only a handful of large amphibious aircraft to have been produced in large numbers during the post-war era, and the first to be developed from the outset as a water bomber.
