- Popis iznad prikazuje ono što su sateliti izmjerili u posljednja dvadeset i četiri sata. To nije popis vulkana u erupciji: erupcija pod oblacima ili prehladna da bi se otkrila neće biti na njemu, a lavino polje koje se hladi nakon erupcije još se može pojaviti.
- Koliko na svijetu ima aktivnih vulkana?
- Smithsonian Institution katalogizira oko 1300 vulkana koji su eruptirali tijekom holocena, otprilike posljednjih 10.000 godina. U bilo kojem trenutku eruptira ih znatno manje — obično nekoliko desetaka.
- Kako satelit prepoznaje da je vulkan aktivan?
- Mjeri infracrveno zračenje. Lava, vrući plinovi i svježe naslage zrače mnogo više od okolnog tla, pa ih toplinski senzor otkriva iz orbite — danju i noću, ali ne kroz gust oblak.
- Znači li vulkan kojega nema da je prestao?
- Ne. Znači da ondje nijedan satelit nije izmjerio toplinu unutar razdoblja. Oblaci, vrijeme prolaska ili erupcija zatvorena ispod površine daju istu tišinu.
Što ovo mjerenje jest, a što nije
- Zračena snaga jest infracrveno zračenje koje je senzor primio u trenutku prolaska iznad. Ona ne mjeri ni emisije, ni onečišćenje, ni bilo kakav doprinos klimatskim promjenama — solarna farma može zauzeti vrh popisa samo zbog odbijene sunčeve svjetlosti.
- Izvor kojega nema na ovoj stranici nije izvor u mirovanju: polarni satelit prolazi dvaput dnevno, oblaci skrivaju tlo, a lokacija koja je bila vruća između dva prolaska nikad nije viđena.
- Katalog lokacija je snimka stanja, izrađena ručno. Pogon otvoren nakon posljednje izgradnje u njemu nedostaje, a zatvoreni pogon i dalje je u njemu.
